Very Early MATL NECKLACE ~Extremely Rare!
This early MATL piece is one of few known made using carved masquettes. The marks indicate that this is a very early necklace made by Miss Poulat. The onyx carving is in the style of those found during the excavations of Teotihuacan near Mexico City. The onyx masquette of this piece is identical in quality and shape as many of the same carved pieces found in Fred Davis' jewelry. Therefore it is likely that the stone carver was known to both of them and perhaps lived in Mexico City or even Puebla where so much onyx is carved even today. This interesting piece is unique and highly collectible. A superb addition for a MATL collection. In addition to its rarity, this necklace is esthetically balanced making it an exquisite work of art. It is a unique example of "Mexican Moderne". The beauty of this piece speaks for itself. However, historically it is also telling us that Miss Poulat had an artistic vision beyond the heavily jeweled pieces of incrusted stones that characterize most of her body of work. One could only speculate that commercial reasons may have have played a role as to why she moved away from these simpler and abstract pieces and into the her more "colonial" style developed later. Overall this is a fascinating piece. Measures 17 inches in length and the inks are 1/2" wide. There are no damages or repairs. MUSEUM QUALITY
