| This pendant depicts a smiling face from a Pre Columbian piece of the Veracruz Remojadas culture. Spratling himself wrote a famous book about this interesting Pre Columbian culture. The book " More Human than Divine" by W. Spratling illustrates the many pieces found in the Remojadas region of the State of Verzcruz in Mexico. A characteristic of this particular culture was the fact that many fine terra-cotta pieces have been found and every one depicts a smiling figure. This interesting piece is unmarked but very likely to be authentic Spratling. The back of the maskette suggest that the piece was affixed to another item and was taken off to make the pendant. Spratlng used this exact maskette design for a large brooch and for one of his fine rosewood boxes. The two cut-off prongs in the back suggest that this one may have been a on the front of a box. A finely crafted sterling chain is attached to the piece measuring 30" in length. The maskette proper is 1-1/2" by 1". Great find. Both the pendant and the chain are i fine condition and show no damage or repairs. VINTAGE QUALITY. | |||||||||
