| Early 1940s Taxco necklace made by Damaso Gallegos. The links on these pieces have large fasceted amethysts and the set is made in silver 980. This is a pre-eagle necklace and Gallegos' early signature. Dates from the late 1930s or early 1940s. Damaso Gallegos was an outstanding silversmith and he learned his trade from his father and uncle. This family background made him one of the few Taxco silversmith that actually came from a family tradition of jewelry making. He has been unfairly given a less than stellar reputation as he is mentioned in the literature as the first Taxco silversmith to make machine-mass production for his jewelry. Indeed, he did mass produce his famous Holly Xmas pins in the 50s and 60s. However, must of his fine jewelry such as these necklace and bracelet are hand wrought with the finest craftsmanship on early Taxco artist. Damaso's jewelry should not be overlooked. This necklace and bracelet set is magnificent! They are both in good condition and shows no repairs. There is a hairline apparent damage inside one of the amethysts but is is hardly visible and this type of flaws are very, very common in Mexican amethyst such as the ones used in Taxco. This is an uncommon find of the finest Mexican vintage silver. Necklace is :47 g (1.7 oz); 2 cm (4/5") wide and 47 cm (18 1/2")in length. Bracelet is: 85g (3oz); 3.2 cm( 1 1/5") wide; 2 cm (3/4") high and 19 cm (7 1/2") in wearable length. COLLECTOR QUALITY. | ||||||||||||
