This is truly a masterful example of the best mid century repousse of the Taxco masters. It is tempting to suggest that this mayhave been made by Justo (Coco) Castillo. The piece is signed JC and it is pre 1948. Justo was one of the Castillo brothers and reportedly the repoussage expert of the Taller. Clearly this piece was made by an artist that had mastered the technique. There are many exceptional clampers from Taxco and the period, but this one stands out. One exceptional example of the best repoussage done in the early part of the 20th C in the tradition of the Plateros de la Ciudad de los Palacios (Mexico City). This fine set is both powerful and finely crafted. The central Mayan-like masquette is flanked by two strong depiction of Quetzalcoatltheme evokes the Neo Aztec movement of the Mexican Modernist art movement. Very much in the style of Matilde Poulat, these MATL-style pieces deserve a special place in a fine collection of Mexican silve ...click for details
