One of the most iconic pieces by Spratling, this necklace is a highly desirable piece. The necklace was made in the early to mid 1930s and bears some of the earliest marks used by Spratling. The necklace was made for a few years and this is the likely the earliest version. The name of the necklace derives from the decorative bird drawings that Spratling saw on a large clay pot he purchased for US Ambassador Dwight Morrow and his wife. Amazing Necklace made in the Style of MATL. Signed by the maker BARRERA. This necklace is likely to have been made in Mexico City rather than Taxco. This is judged by the repoussage which resembles the Mexican style developed in the Colonial times. The unique Mexican style was never evident in Taxco pieces. Made probably in the 1930s.
