--- ON HOLD ---

This pendant is a large and very unique collectors piece. A reliquary/locket/hair keeper. It is composed in sterling silver, natural pearls and glass beads. This particular piece displays two loving birds safekeeping their nest in the center with two "eggs" made by small seed pearls. In accordance to the Pajaritos Style, flowers surround the birds. The remarkable thing about these Pajarito jewelry is the meticulous care that the maker took in miniscule details creating a microcosmic garden. Most of the fine detail cannot be appreciated by the naked eye. This makes you wonder why the artist had gone into such detail perceived only through a magnifying device. One would think that the artist was immersed in this microscopic garden and enjoyed the crafting of each piece. The three pendants are reminiscent of the pre-Columbian jewelry of the Mixtec. This large brooch/pendant is also a miniature glass box that can be accessed through the back. A cleverly designed hinge mechanism opens thee compartment that was often used to safe keep a lock of hair from the first haircut of a new baby or the hair of a loved one gone to war. This is called "guarda pelo" or hair-keeper. Others also referred to this pieces are reliquaries, yet not in the most strict religious definition. The dating of this pendant is difficult but it may be from earlier part of the 20th century. A unique and exquisite jewel. 26 g (2.4oz); 6 x 3.8 x 0.92 cm (2.4 x 1.5 x 0.4”).COLLECTOR QUALITY Pajarito (birdie) jewelry is a typical style of the town of GUANAJUATO in Mexico. This mining town was also once on the the wealthiest Spanish Colonial cities in Mexico. The pajarito jewelry often is referred to as having a Victorian look.
